Traveling North
We left Phoenix on Saturday, April 28th, and traveled only to Flagstaff for the night. Sunday we headed towards Kanab, Utah on Rt 89 through the Navajo Reservation. A stop at Cameron Trading Post, established in 1916, revealed lovely rugs, beautifully crafted jewelry and Native American art. We then enjoyed the wind-swept hills, and purple painted mountains dotted occasionally with hogans and a few horses. The open-air roadside stands were not yet open for trading, but the views were spectacular. Near Page, AZ, we viewed the Vermillion Cliffs, crossed the Colorado River at Lee’s Ferry (where George leaves for his river trips down the canyon) and then started to climb towards higher mts (7000+ft) through tall pines heading towards Kanab.
